What's so funny?
(How humor reflects understanding)

Aquarium - one of KIDWARE's 17 programs for children - comes complete with riddles for children to hear and giggle about. Once children learn about different fish, they make up their own fish riddles.  It's fun and reflects their learning, too!

What is funny? Well, that all depends.  It depends upon a number of factors including culture and context.  Others' responses to the situation or the statement are important in judging what makes us laugh.  Children's cognitive and linguistic abilities are also determinants of what's funny.

We can consider children's understanding and creation of humor within the framework of child development.

Through observing children's play and listening for what they consider funny, we can gain information about their cognitive and linguistic abilities.

The development of logical and creative thinking and expressive language is reflected as children's sense of humor expands.  For example, five-year-olds play with words and often create words by substituting initial consonants that result in funny sounding words.
