KIDWARE Enhances Reading First Initiative!

The overall goal of Early Reading First is to provide preschoolers with the cognitive skills essential for reading success. To achieve this goal for all young children requires systematic and explicit instruction in the domain area related directly to literacy development. These include: oral language development, specifically listening and understanding and speaking and communicating and literacy, specifically phonemic awareness, phonics, alphabet recognition and identification, book knowledge and appreciation, print awareness and concepts

Phonemic Awareness - denotes the ability to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. In Phonics activities children learn about the correspondence between letters and the spoken sounds they represent.

KIDWARE offers individualized opportunities at the computer, so each student progresses at her/his own rate, and is motivated by content that is personalized and meaningful.
In other KIDWARE activities children learn that print has meaning and that words can be written (typed), and a story can be read. In specific phonics activities children hear and see the sound of each letter. They then use the microphone to practice that letter sound.
KIDWARE permits children to develop, write, read and record their own stories. Through this process children gain a personal understanding of the reading/writing process.
In KIDWARE the computer provides verbal directions and instructions for using the software programs. Children practice listening skills and gain understanding of vocabulary associated with schooling. KIDWARE can be customized to provide these in any language.
In using Outcomes Express with KIDWARE the teacher has a diagnostic tool that helps her group of children with similar needs for instructional activities. This strategy supports the principle of linking assessment with instructional action. This supports teachers as they link computer experiences with other classroom activities, and thereby reinforce and review learning experiences presented at the computer. Children apply and practice the skills and concepts introduced and used at the computer. This strengthens the integration of all components required in effective reading programs.
